How Lady Gaga's Style Has Evolved Over the Past Decade
2007: Pre-Platinum Gaga
Before Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, made it big, she didn’t sport her breakout platinum blonde hair style. She later decided to bleach her hair so she wouldn’t be confused with fellow brunette Amy Winehouse at the time. A smart decision to separate herself and her stardom.
While she hadn’t hit the level of fame and glamour, we’ve came to expect from the fabulous Lady Gaga, Stefani still had her own thing going on. We must remember, this was 2007 after all! Cheetah print and leather jackets were THE thing. At this point in her career, she still had a natural look when it came to hair and makeup.
2009: The Bubble Dress
This short frock Lady Gaga wore during her performance at the 2009 Grammy Celebration Concert in Boston was inspired by a Hussein Chalayan design, and was followed by a matching bubble piano and a bubble vest. If you haven’t seen this number on Gaga, maybe you’ll remember it on Andy Samberg or Tina from Glee.
This bubble look was one of the first in a long list of fashion stunts Gaga has pulled off while performing. At this point in time, we had grown tired of seeing the glamour divas of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and the skater grunge girls of the 2000s. Gaga showed us something different, something almost no one could imitate, and we loved it.
2009: The Streets of Manhattan
Here we have classic Lady Gaga, the Gaga we all know and love, just taking a casual stroll down the streets of Manhattan with underwear on top of her clothes...although I don't think she knows where a hairnet goes. Either way it’s still fashion and we still love It even though that hair could use a proper hair net.
While some may see this look and ask themselves what she was thinking, we just accept it as it is. This is a Gaga appreciation article after all. This look was the precursor to Gaga’s McQueen era. The lace and Victorian styling took fame and glamour to a new direction, reclaiming the diva title for the weirdo’s and outcasts.
2009: Performance at Skylight Studio
Lady Gaga put a pretty little bow on the VEVO launch at Skylight Studio back in December 2009 with her performance.
2009: The Not-So-Virgin Mary
A year before the iconic meat dress, Lady Gaga solidified her controversial brand with this Virgin Mary-inspired outfit at the launch of V61, hosted by V Magazine, Marc Jacobs, and Belvedere Vodka in September 2009. As you can see Gaga is starting to find her stride in fashion and make statements using her looks.
This iconic look shows a lot of body, something Gaga’s early looks were known for. Early into her fame she was rivaling pop singers like Brittney Spears and Christina Aguilera so showing body was just the name of the game. This risqué take on the Virgin Mary rivaled that of Madonna, only fueling the feud between the two.
2009: Fashion Week
Lady Gaga attended the Marc Jacobs 2010 looking like she was going to hold the place up at point blank. Instead, she posed with Madonna to prove that drama is short lived between icons. Gaga’s outfit consisted of an embellished dress that hit right below the knee along with a white trench coat.
As for accessories Gaga’s fashion was… well, let’s just say she was a more is more type of gal at the time. If the textured pink and platinum hair wasn’t enough, she’s also rocking studded gloves and a masquerade mask. You know, just something a little subtle for the folks at fashion week.
2009: MTV VMAs
No one will forget the day that Gaga won her first MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, mostly because she accepted the award while wearing this outlandish ensemble. Covered head to toe in peek-a-boo red lace and a crown made of matching material. The look was straight from Alexander McQueen.
This moment is one of the most recognizable looks and award acceptances of her career. This “Bad Romance” look has been imitated and referenced for years since. It’s undeniably Gaga and that’s why we love it. The audacity she has to push art, fashion, style, and music to it’s limits is inspiring.
2009: MTV VMAs "Paparazzi" Performance
In what is, perhaps, one of the greatest musical performances of all time, Gaga began her song "Paparazzi" at the 2009 MTV VMAs in what seemed to be an otherwise typical pop production. Her and her entourage were in head-to-toe white outfits, accessorized with iridescent beading, lace and mirrors. (Extra)
Near the end of the performance, Gaga's outfit spontaneously begins to bleed as she is lifted above the stage in a death scene as a commentary on how the rabid culture of fame literally harms its celebrities. (Remember, this was just one year removed from Britney's high-profile meltdown.)
2009: IFA Fair
Sia, is that you?? Several years before Sia hit it big, Lady Gaga donned the now-iconic platinum wig and sunglasses at the IFA Fair in Berlin. In her typical fashion, she’s rocking a bold structured garment with a loud, bold, pattern. Match that with a pop of color in the stockings and lipstick and that’s a classical Gaga look.
While Gaga is settling into her unique point of view on fashion, she always carries a bit of nightlife in her looks. While yes, she’s wearing a dress and stockings, she’s also wearing a pair of shades. Let’s not forget to mention that hair! What better to wear to IFA Fair than a helmet hair bob? She’s rocking it out.
2009: MuchMusic Video Awards Performance
Like Britney Spears before her and Katy Perry after her, Lady Gaga used her assets to create a spark that would get people talking, yet again. Who doesn’t love a flaming bra? What is it with popstars and the whole bazooka booby thing anyways? Either way, this look… this one right here is why we love Lady Gaga!
The outfit is a simple leotard. However, the studs and spikes along the leather appliqués show a touch of fetish with a nod to leather culture and BDSM. The gloves and boots continue the look, but the explosive bra? It’s just the cherry on top. Gaga matched this dynamite outfit with a simple razored platinum blonde mullet.
2010: Lollapalooza
Lady Gaga performed at the 2010 Lollapalooza music festival, giving us classic Gaga vibes with her yellow wig, sequin glasses, and fishnet stockings. The fashion in the 2010’s was especially colorful. Bright colored animal print, bedazzled glasses and bright colors make this look fit for the stage! Also, a leotard, this outfit would be easy to perform in.
This outfit is also right around when Gaga first started wearing her signature yellow hair. She went on to rock this hair for years. If you also notice the jacket Gaga is wearing, it’s featuring large shoulder pads. During this era of Gaga’s performance looks she heavily referenced ‘80s pop fashion, specifically David Bowie.
2010 Brit Awards
Maybe she was campaigning for a role in a reboot of Phantom of the Opera, or maybe she's just being Gaga. No, what she was actually doing was paying tribute to the late famous designer Alexander McQueen. As you remember back to her 2009 MTV VMAs acceptance, Gaga and McQueen had worked together before.
Whereas before the outfit was scarlet red, gaga is now donning a more modest dress with a lace face mask. This look is definitely more European than her previous McQueen. The hair and lace reference baroque period elegance, the subtle white makes this look an elevated piece of editorial fashion. One thing is for sure, even though Gaga is covered completely, she still wears the fashion, it doesn’t wear her.
2010: 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Red Carpet
The 2010 Grammys was a big night for Gaga style-wise. She changed outfits several times, setting the tone first with this space-inspired gown on the red carpet. Notice the shoes—how does she manage to walk at all??? Here you can see Gaga again featuring her signature yellow hair. The stark color works well with this out of this world dress.
But enough about the hair. Let’s talk about these shoes again for a second. Look at them! They’re literally standing on nothing! How does she do it? We don’t know. Let’s also not forget this dress, it’s amazing. The structure of the dress supports these stellar rings that circle Gaga. Instead of carrying a purse, she chose to carry a sputnik and that’s pretty awesome.
2010: 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Performance
Is it Kesha? Is it David Bowie? No, it's Lady Gaga performing at the 2010 Grammys...sidenote, how can we get the name of her waxer??? Here again, we can see Gaga’s reference to pop legends before her. David Bowie was famous for hit iconic face makeup and as a Bowie fan herself, she is paying tribute.
This outfit is all about those shoulder pads and peplums around her waist. If you didn’t know, Gaga is actually pretty short to support such large fashion pieces. The high cut of her panty line helps elongate her legs, also the deep cut of the top provides her with enough dimension to pull this off.
2010: 52nd Annual Grammy Awards
The shocked people sitting around Gaga in this photo look like they're thinking what I think we're all thinking... This look was absurd! But dang, do we love to see it. Who in their right mind would wear a headpiece larger than the space needle? She looks like she is straight out of a science fiction show.
2010: The (Infamous) Meat Dress
If you’ve never laid eyes on Lady Gaga’s edible arrangement, then I’m questioning where you’ve been the ten or so years. The dress has been the butt of endless meat related jokes on and offline, but you may be surprised to learn about the message behind this outrageous savory ensemble.
Lady Gaga herself said that this dress was a tribute to soldiers discharged because of their sexuality. Gaga urged people not to discriminate against the men and women who put their lives on the line for America, because “when our lives are taken, we are meat all the same.”
2011: Jo Calderone at the MTV VMAs
Lady Gaga’s short-lived alter ego channeled greaser coolness at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. She arrived to the awards show as Jo Calderone, an Italian-American from New Jersey, and remained completely in character throughout the night. Jo has been featured in Vogue Hommes Japan and was in the music video for “You and I”.
Listen, Gaga has always been one to shock the audience. She is a five star entertainer after all – maybe even one of the greatest of all time. Gaga’s drag king portrayal of an Italian man pushes gender norms and what the everyday person see’s a man or woman to be. Maybe this was just a piece of performance art, or maybe this was her way to poke fun at the rumors that she’s a man.
2011: Madison Square Garden
She was performing at Madison Square Garden, so I guess she wanted to keep in line with the "square" theme... At this point in time Gaga seemed to just be doing things to get a rise out of people. There are a couple things that remained true about Gaga’s fashion though. The shoulder pads and the yellow hair.
Gaga has a love for all things odd. Maybe she’s a big fan of the marvel villain Magneto? Her headdress seems to say she is. If you look closely there aren’t even sleeves to this outfit at all. There are only a couple of slits that her arms seem to poke out of. Honestly, she’s just seeing what she can get by with.
2013: Christmas in London
No one does Christmas like Gaga does Christmas! Leave it to Lady Gaga to dress up like a literal Christmas tree, complete with ornaments, a tree “skirt”, and a star on top! We’re sure she was having a great time that night. Her smile seems to say she was at least! She loves to play with drastic hair color, peep the green wig.
If there’s one thing Gaga does great, it’s a theme. Whatever party she was going to must have gasped when she walked in looking like the Christmas tree from Charlie Brown. She’s absolutely stellar. Of all things, she’s rocking her own version of Santa’s boots. She’s got sky high platforms that go to her shins.
2013: Streets of London
Yet again, Lady Gaga blesses the streets with her larger-than-life couture; this time, the streets are in London. Wearing a wig that is around thirteen and a half inches off of her head matched with a bow made of white puffs, Gaga is turning heads no doubt. She also has what looks to be a bedazzled chin strap to hold it all on.
But let’s not forget the boots… well, they may be more like hooves. We’re not sure what the angle here was for Gaga but throw up a peace sign and who cares! She’s bringing hippy vibes, blue-tinted glasses and a smirk that says she could care less if you get the point of it or not. She’s fabulous all on her own.
2013: A Picasso Painting in Real Life
London must be where Lady Gaga feels the most inspired, because in the same December 2013 trip she brought Picasso's paintings to life on the London streets. If you don’t know, Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and all-around artist that made surreal “Cubist” art that showed life through an abstract lens.
In essence, this fashion moment paid tribute to the artists point of view in a very chique way. Gaga knows her references and this just proves the point that Lady Gaga will also go down in history as an artist before her time. This look features Picasso’s style of print on the main body, a mid-shin skirt and yellow clogs.
2013: "Artpop" Press Conference in Tokyo
Gaga truly embraced Tokyo culture when she visited to promote her "Artpop" album back in 2013. Instead of appropriating Japanese street culture like many pop princesses before, Gaga shared her love of Anime by pulling off this sailor moon inspired costume. The look wasn’t an exact copycat but was a nod to the show.
This look is classic Japanese street fashion. It’s shocking, eye catching, and says something super specific about the wearer. The hair is Gaga’s own version of the character, and the ribbon fascinator is a reference to how the character transforms into her superhero self. Of course, all in head-to-toe tartan.
2013: 23rd Annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards
Gaga channeled Tilda Swinton and the mad hatter for this iconic look at the 23rd Annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards. The look was in all ghostly white. Her makeup featured a washed-out face with black beady eyes. The hair added to the feral, yet sophisticated, vibe of this ensemble.
Lady Gaga is excellent at making a monochromatic outfit transform into an elevated look by using jewelry, beading, crystals, and accessories. If you look closely, the platform shoes are also studded. There are an endless number of details to look at in this look. It’s almost like she wants you to keep looking at her.
2013: YouTube Music Awards
Gaga attended the 2013 YouTube Music Awards with fake teeth and no pants. All she was wearing was a leather shirt dress, high-top socks, and a fedora. This was an obvious reference to the 1993 comedy/romance movie “Risky Business”, just with an iconic Lady Gaga twist of course! She always has her own point of view.
In “Risky Business,” Tom Cruise has an iconic scene where he’s playing an air guitar in only a white dress shirt, socks and shades. Gaga wore black leather (of course) finished off by an unbelievably tall pair of platform shoes! We’re not sure what the fake teeth referenced, maybe Tom Cruise?
2013: Hotel in London
All celebrities know to stay out of the sun. Most just slather on some SPF, but Lady Gaga chooses to wear an umbrella for a hat. Gaga is in all black down to her hands. She’s wearing some sort of flying saucer shaped head piece with a slicked back bun. Maybe she was just blocking out the haters?
Either that or she just gets really cold in London. She’s also carrying a giant purse which is something we rarely see her do. Gaga is a floating presence on the streets. She looks like she stepped right off a runway show to go grab some toast smeared with caviar. One thing is for sure, those boots were made for walking.
2013: Barefoot in Berlin
The street is obviously Lady Gaga's runway but going barefoot in Berlin is a new level of bold. This look seems like a continuation of her previous all white look from the 23rd Annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards. The look almost seems like an “Alice in Wonderland” reference. The bare feet just add to that.
This wig is also very similar to the wig worn in the previous outfit, so it is obviously a continuation of the previous look. The entire dress is wrapped in a piece of chiffon that has cut-out hearts bordering the bottom of the hemline. Maybe the bare feet ads to the girlie charm of the outfit. Either way it’s Gaga and we love to see it.
2013: Berlin (Again)
The promotion for Lady Gaga's album Artpop got a little weird in Berlin. Here, it looks like Gaga took a couch from the '70s and turned it into a dress. Ok, firstly let’s state the obvious – this look like it’s straight out of George Lucas studios. Seriously though, what in the world (or out of this world) is this thing?
The headpiece looks like a gigantic Furby! The dress is simple enough, just a mustard yellow wrap dress with a tie in the middle topped with a fur stole. This look was obviously made to draw a crowd, and that it did. Gaga is always serving looks for the paparazzi to feast their eyes, and this one is no exception. She’s the Furby queen!!!
2013: iTunes Festival Performance
It may seem like Lady Gaga was channeling the little mermaid during her 2013 performance at the iTunes Festival, but her inspiration was actually The Birth of Venus by Sandro Bottticelli. The seashell bra and fig leaf panty are direct references of the famous painting. The goddess Venus was a big muse for Gaga’s Artpop era.
During her intro, she popped out of a seashell, which was direct symbolism of the birth of Venus. A line from her song even goes like this: “Rocket #9 take off to the planet (to the planet) Venus. Aphrodite lady seashell bikini (garden panty). Venus. Let's blast off to a new dimension (in your bedroom)
Venus. Aphrodite lady seashell bikini (get with me) Venus.”
2013: MTV VMAs
Gaga donned a literal blank slate to start this VMA performance. But don't worry, things got weirder (and less covered) from here. The canvas wrapped square outfit was just the fresh start to a new era of Gaga. This was the canvas she would go on to paint her “ArtPop” on. Along with this blank outfit, she had a blank stare.
Gaga is not afraid to take big risks with her outfits. While they’re out there and usually a big, bold, statement - she never misses a single detail. She wanted to invoke a feeling with this look, and that she did. She started the performance with blank expression, clothes, and straight forward singing. However, she ended it covered in paint.
2014: Pretty in Pink
The loud and extravagant attire of The Fame days has temporarily been shelved. Exhibit A: Lady Gaga stepping out in a subdued pink suit by Christian Cowan-Sanluis. While the rest of us wouldn’t call an outfit covered in glitter “subdued”, it’s a relatively tame choice for the Grammy-winning pop star.
In this look, Gaga is in head-to-ankle glittering pink. Looking like the pink panther, she is perched on top of what look to be at least ten-inch platforms. Along with the ensemble she’s also wearing long platinum hair that has a touch of pink on the tips. She looks like she’s ready for the derby.
2014: Club in Paris
Like Arya Stark, Lady Gaga stuck 'em with the pointy end while in Paris. (Side note, you should definitely look up the video of Gaga getting out of her car and inflating. The entire look was inflatable. She looked like she was going to launch into space at any moment and we loved it!
Gaga has always been down for the weird. What’s cooler than an inflatable star suite? And who better to where it than Lady Gaga? Even though Gaga at this point in time wasn’t wearing such absurd pieces, we’re glad to see her stay true to her roots and give us weirdos something to talk about every now and then.
2014: Gimpo International Airport in South Korea
Lady Gaga always makes sure to immerse herself in the culture wherever she goes...although the teal glitter dots on her face were just for kicks and giggles. She’s just wearing something casual for her stroll through the airport undoubtedly to her private jet! The key for good air travel is comfort, right?
What says “I’m sitting in first class like a matching orange structured shirt and pant set? Gaga is obviously going with some sort of fish themed moment. The embellishments on her shirt and pants look like some sort of scales. The sleeves also protrude out from her body like a pair of fins.
2014: Narita International Airport
Look, it's The Birth of Venus: The Sequel. Gaga is obviously doing another rendition of her Aphroditie lady, seashell bikini. Venus! Except this time she’s in a crystal lined jumpsuit with a peek-a-boo nude illusion underneath it. She’s of course wearing stoned platform, as one does, along with a pretty iconic pair of sunglasses.
This look shows at first glance that Gaga doesn’t take herself too seriously. Her fashion is fun while still maintaining a solid reference and unique point of view. Overall, though, you can tell that she genuinely has fun wearing these insane outfits. We love to see it and she loves to serve it!
2014: Roseland Ballroom
Yeti Gaga? The Abominable Snow Lady? No Chewbacca didn’t get a bleach job, Mother monster is just going all out with fur tonight! She is wearing what looks to be a stringy type of fur. This look is a play on the Hollywood classic accessory called foxtails. Foxtails are…well, a string of foxtails that people wore as stoles during the winter.
Obviously Gaga isn’t going to wear some poor fox’s tail, so she did it her own way! She became the foxtails entirely. From the hat, the dress, the bag, and the boots – she became a walking ball of fluff ready to take on the night. Imaging the taxi ride with that outfit. One thing is for sure, her bodyguards must have carried a lint roller that night.
2014: The 86th Annual Academy Awards
Here, we really get to the beginning of Gaga's style transformation. She traded in her usual weird getups for this chic pink gown at the 2014 Oscars. She obviously wanted to show the world that she wasn’t just a one trick pony. Lady Gaga can do it all. Bizarre, glamour, grunge, and grace. This soft blush gown was just the ticket to break out into her new era.
The look is classic Hollywood. The beading on the dress even mimics the lines and structure of the Oscar trophy man. Everything that Gaga does is on purpose, and no detail is looked over. It was at this point that we got to see the new phase of Gaga’s fame. She took a breather and refocused into something new, and we loved it.
2015: Classic Glamour at the Grammys
Although she does don a wild outfit now and again, the September 2014 release of Lady Gaga’s Cheek to Cheek ushered in a new era of classic fashion and a fresh new take on old Hollywood glamour. Just like the jazz standards on her newest album, Gaga’s red carpet looks evoke timeless style with a twist.
Gaga has an immense appreciation for all kinds of entertainment and expression. This new era is all about making music that will age like fine wine and serving looks that will similarly be referenced for years to come. The dress itself may be a plain low-cut silver dress on anyone else, but with Gaga’s personality and style, she owned the red carpet that night with her smirk and emeralds.
2015: Leaving The Langham Hotel
Here, Gaga is clearly getting into character for her upcoming Sound of Music performance at the 2015 Oscars. This unique piece of fashion looks like something out of a post-apocalyptic Riola commercial. The eye makeup is meant to widen Gaga’s cheek bones to give that polish girl look. The braids also stick straight out.
This again is a perfect example of how Lady Gaga can sell anything she wears. On anyone else, this ensemble would completely take away from the autonomy of the person wearing the clothes. However, for Gaga, it just works somehow. Even thought this outfit is made with rigid lines and structured fabric, Gaga still owns it.
2015: 87th Annual Academy Awards Red Carpet
Stars: They wash their dishes with rubber gloves, just like us! What better way to spice up an otherwise bridal dress than a pair of giant, fire engine red, pair of rubber dish washing gloves? This dress is gorgeous. The structure of the top half of the garment is just impeccable. The shoulder flairs perfectly compliment the neckline.
The dress is also patterned with a design that almost mimics the look of soap suds. One thing is for sure, she scrubbed that runway clean with this dress. Her makeup that night also speaks to the classics, which we love. When it comes to a red lip, Gaga can pull it off like Marilyn herself. But it just wouldn’t be Gaga without a twist – the red gloves.
2015: Sound of Music Performance at The Oscars
Gaga has always been known by the masses for her fashion choices, but after her performance at the 87th Annual Academy Awards honoring Julie Andrews, all anyone could talk about online was how she could "really sing". (Where had everyone been???) Of course Gaga can actually sing! It takes a powerhouse voice to pull of her music.
But we’re not just here to talk about Gaga’s amazing singing abilities, we’re here for the fashion darling! In this performance we really get a peek into who Gaga is down to her heart. She’s an entertainer. She’s an artist. She’s ultimately a lover of music and expression. As you can see, she is beaming with pride and joy, all in textured chiffon dress straight from a ‘Swan Lake” daydream.
2015: Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Annual Grants Banquet
Letting her talent do the talking at the 2015 Oscars really worked in her favor, and since then Gaga's look has been totally stripped down. Here you can see Gaga in all her glory. All she is wearing is a simple white gown with a sweetheart neckline. Her personality shines through in her hair and makeup, which is quintessential Gaga.
Gaga here again is leading with her talent, legacy, and artistry. She no longer needs absurd costumes to grab attention. Everyone is transfixed by her because of who she is. She’s Gaga! The bleached brows are almost hypnotic to look at. The dress isn’t the most lavish thing in the world, but Gaga sells it all the same.
2015: On a Private Plane
Now this outfit gives a whole new meaning to "stripped down"! She didn't wear this to an event; it's just her casual private plane style. We’re not sure how much more transparent you can be than a jumpsuit made entirely of fishnets. The sleeves and cuffs on the legs are straight from the ‘70s disco.
Gaga is known to push the boundaries in her fashion, and she does it well obviously! This look probably classifies more accurately as a unique piece of lingerie rather than an outfit she would wear out in public. On the comfort of your own jet, you too could wear a fishnet jumper, we’re sure she’d recommend it too!
2015: "China: Through the Looking Glass" Costume Institute Benefit Gala
The theme may have been "China," but Gaga looked more like a cross between Frida Kahlo and a Samurai. (Neither of those is Chinese.) This is a perfect example of how someone can appreciate a cultures fashion without appropriating it for their own gain. Gaga’s overcoat is structured similarly to that of a samurai’s.
The headpiece also is reminiscent to the hair styling seen in art depicting the samurais. Other than that, the buck stops there. Gaga is able to serve a moment tailored for a group of people without doing the obvious. Not to mention, most of these types of outfits are ceremonial, so having a healthy respect for them is necessary.
2016: 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet
For Gaga's first major acting award (winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress - Miniseries or Television Film), she went with a classic Hollywood glam look à la Marilyn Monroe. This dress is her rendition of Marilyn’s when she famously (or infamously) met the Queen! The neckline is cut exactly like Marilyns, as well as the bra.
Obviously Gaga is going to bring her own point of view to the reference. The hair is Marilyn-esque, but the makeup is Gaga’s classic formal go-to. Around this time is when Gaga was aiming to become more commercial, especially on film. Every singer has their moment in which they break into acting, luckily Gaga’s is obviously going well.
2016: 58th Annual Grammy Awards
You may think this is a return to her previously outlandish style choices. However, this outfit was an homage to Ziggy Stardust/David Bowie (a major personal influence) who had just died a month before. Gaga has referenced David Bowie in her looks prior, and as an admitted super-fan it was absolutely necessary for her to pay tribute again.
Performers like David Bowie were entirely ahead of their time, and as the one pushing boundaries of art and performance in the present, Gaga wanted to bring a little Bowie along once again. This look features slicked back red hair, a silk embroidered blue kimono jacket and red platform heels of course!
2016: Super Bowl 50
When she sang the national anthem at Super Bowl 50, Gaga strutted onstage in a sparkling all-red number. If you think this is a little understand for her, don't worry. She sported sparkling red eye shadow to match. Gaga knows how to do something as serious as the Super Bowl national anthem while staying true to herself.
This crimson suite was tailored to her gills! She livened up the look with a platinum slicked back mullet moment and a beautiful pair of stud earrings. If you didn’t already know, Gaga is pretty short. That’s probably a likely reason why she likes to wear platform heels with almost every outfit she wears on stage!
2016: 88th Annual Academy Awards
Gaga continued her appearances throughout the 2016 awards season with classic Old Hollywood choices, like this cream pantsuit at the Oscars. She's saying "I can be normal, too. Take me seriously." For years Gaga had just been seen as the oddball character, but now she’s solidifying her reputation as a serious artist.
There’s no doubt that Gaga is one of the greatest entertainers of our lifetime. In this beautiful cream gown, she’s showing just that. This look is timeless, classic, but still Gaga. The structured pleating around the waistline and the chest are a beautiful and unique way to take a classic gown and elevate it to something new.
2017: Toronto International Film Festival
The Oscars was a time to be conservative. For the premiere of her Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, the audience was a bit more current. So, she opted for trash bag "boots?" Makes sense. This look is a glimpse back at the Gaga of the past. The weird dimensions, colors, and textures remind us of the Gaga we all fell in love with years ago.
Artists always go through transitions during their career. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t stay fresh. However, in the case of someone so trailblazing like Gaga, we can remember for a moment where it all started and how great it was back then. With unique materials, she is reminding us all that she’s still Mother Monster.
2018: 60th Annual Grammy Awards
Remember when Rihanna wore that huge yellow dress with a tremendous train to the Met Gala in 2015? Well, now every other celebrity wants a piece of the action. Enter Lady Gaga at the 2018 Grammys. Trains are one of those things that are either in or out. At this point in time, they were way in and way long!
This gown is all black with a nude illusion under the top half. The material looks like a textured fabric with a nice sheen on it. This gives this elongated skirt extra dimension and body while wearing. The top half features long lace sleeves and a neckline that ends right under the jawline – typical Gaga. She’s stunning.
2018: 75th Venice Film Festival Red Carpet
On the red carpet, the goal is to catch the eye of the cameramen and crowd around you and she definitely does that. This gown is head-to-toe feathers. Feathers are the perfect medium to play with on the red carpet. Feathers have been a lavish accessory on the red carpet since the glory days of film, making it a timeless buy playful way to catch the eye.
2019: Met Gala
At the 2019 Met Gala, Lady Gaga had not one...not two...nor three...but FOUR looks! Technically, she just removed layers and layers down to her underwear. But, what else were you supposed to do as co-chair?! The them at this Met Gala was, CAMP! She served camp not once, but four times darling!
Camp is all about bringing something that is completely over the top and characterized while still referencing a specific point of view. Camp is for people who are in on the joke. It’s the ultimate fashion statement to say anyone can do glamour, but I can do glamour so well that I can make fun of glamour at the same time.
2019: 91st Annual Academy Awards
Here we are at the Oscars, again, and this time Gaga won for Best Original Song. She also performed, and (as is her Oscars tradition) opted for something a little more conservative and understated (for her). What wasn't understated was that necklace! (and the too much bronzer, but we can forgive some things.)
This look is a classic hoop skirt with a straightforward design. The dimensions of the garment bring a bit more life to the look, but still keeps it classic. In this moment, this is Gaga showcasing herself without being a larger-than-life pop star. She’s an actress! An academy awarded actress at that. She can do it all.
2019: 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards
Gaga's 2019 Golden Globe dress by Valentino was lux and lavender. She also dyed her hair to match, which was an interesting choice. Valentino does effortless fashion very well. This dress looks like it stepped out of a renaissance painting, and we love it. The material swags, bunches, and folds perfectly.
The unique color of this garment pays respect to Gaga’s uniqueness as well. All in all, this look was spot on. The lavender makes Gaga’s skin glow as she sashays down the red carpet. As always, she isn’t afraid to go big with the jewelry. Not everyone can support such daring fashion, but Lady Gaga will give it to you no matter what.
2018: "A Star is Born" UK Premiere Red Carpet
For A Star Is Born's UK premiere, Gaga wore a European corset-inspired ensemble that would look at home in any royal court. But it also looks like she's serving her head up on a platter. Collars like these are a specific Victorian fashion trend we’ve all seen before. The difference is Gaga always puts her own spin on it.
This dress has gorgeous piping on the skirt and sleeves, giving an otherwise plain white fabric extra dimension and appeal. The sleeves drape perfectly at her wrists and show a little skin at the shoulder and cleavage area. The corset is a gorgeously beaded piece that gives her body shape to support the puffy sleeves and skirt.
2018: ELLE's 25th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration
Gaga's decision to wear a pantsuit to an event where women were being honored was a purposeful one. During her speech, she told the audience that "In this suit, I felt like me today. In this suit, I felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut...I decided today I wanted to take the power back. Today, I wear the pants."
This suit is in a way a double entendre, The suit has been a symbol of the boys’ club for generations. Everyone knows that businessmen wear suits and that this whole vibe enforces a harmful narrative that men are in charge. This suit is oversized and baggy, which in a way shows that every person in a suit is just a person playing dress-up. We’re all a person under those clothes.
2018: "A Star is Born" LA Premiere Red Carpet
A Hollywood premiere calls for Old Hollywood glam. Silver white hair, flowing silver dress, and a b old red lip. This is peak "reformed" Gaga with no crazy wigs or spikes in sight! This fabric on this dress glitters through the room. She looks like the embodied figure of a star, shining in the sky. It’s gorgeous.
The point of view for Gaga’s style here pairs the two concepts of stardom. When anyone thinks of Hollywood, it’s the golden days of Hollywood. This dress is a classic silhouette paired with a fresh and modern take on classic makeup and hair. We’re loving this next era of Gaga. She’s the brightest star in the room.
