40 Groovy ’70s Trends That Are Back in Style

Bell bottoms are making a huge comeback. In fact, you’ve probably seen them in your local department stores or online. Few trends are as iconic as bell bottoms, and we’re psyched to see them coming back.

We suggest grabbing yourself a pair of high-waisted bell bottoms because they help create a flattering figure. You can pair them with some tennis shoes or platform sandals—it’s up to you! The best thing about bell bottoms is that they’re incredibly versatile.

Everything was mustard yellow in the ’70s from the clothing to the fridge—yes, even the fridge. Anyone that lived through the decade can attest how strong of a hold it had, and it’s coming back. To be honest, it isn’t as bad as remember.

Yellow, in general, can be tough to style, but we got a quick guide: go with other neutrals. It doesn’t matter if you roll with tan, white, black, or dark brown. Mustard yellow always looks good with neutrals. We particularly love a mustard yellow and dove gray combo. 

There was so much variety with sleeves in the ’70s from sleeveless to bishop sleeves to bell sleeves. With women’s sleeves being generally tight with little wiggle room, we’re excited to see bell sleeves return.

Naturally, bell sleeves go beautifully with bell bottoms, if you want the ultimate ’70s outfit. Otherwise, you could pair bell sleeves with a high waisted skirt or just a pair of regular skinny jeans! The options are endless.

Every woman in the ’70s owned a wrap dress. They were an icon of the decade, invited by designer Diane von Furstenberg. The ’70s had some pretty gnarly patterns that are trying to make a comeback, but no one would blame you if you went with a simple pattern or solid color.

Wrap dresses are crazy easy to style because they flatter pretty much any figure. Whether you want to wear tennis shoes, platform sandals, or heels, wrap dresses look amazing. Now, there are tons of different designs, so don’t be afraid to experiment. 

The disco era brought us a lot of exciting fashion trends, but few things were as popular as bra tops or bralettes. Of course, they’re coming back with full force. They’re perfect summer wear when the sun is beaming down on you.

If you want to wear a bra top, you can look at fashion icons like Kim K. She loves bra tops. She mostly wears them with skirts, but you can always go with the classic bra top and jeans look. If you want to be truly ’70s, get a weird color bra top!

Co-Ords made styling easy in the ’70s. Unfortunately, it fell out of style pretty quickly in the ’80s and ’90s. At that point, it was a major fashion faux pas to step out in an outfit with a matching pattern. Thankfully, they’re coming back.

There’s one big difference with co-ords today; the patterns are modernized. Many co-ords nowadays go with floral patterns or solid colors. There’s also a variety of design options from skirts to pants. You can wear dress them up or go minimalist—it’s all up to you!

There’s something about crochet that just screams comfy. Maybe it’s that our grandma’s homes were filled with it or maybe it’s because it’s a great way to stay warm—we don’t know. What we do know is that this fashion trend is coming back, especially multi-colored crochet.

Crochet can be hard to wear if you aren’t sure how to style it. Most crochet garments have large holes, so we suggest wearing it over something. You can wear a crochet top over a camisole or a crochet dress. Then, there’s always crochet hats, vests, and scarves. 

Halter necklines tend to pop up every other decade. During the ’70s, halter tops and dresses were perfect for disco. Then, they disappeared and didn’t pop up again until the ’90s. Since both of these decades are coming back, halter necklines were pretty much a shoo-in.

Halter necklines look beautiful as a dress or a top; it’s just a matter of how you want to dress for the day. Halter dresses can also be paired with platform sandals or heels, while halter tops are more casual when worn with jeans and sneakers.

Whatever happened to long-sleeve dresses? We have no explanation for why they went out of style. Thankfully, they’re making their return, which is excellent news for those colder months when you’d rather be at home wrapped in a blanket.

Long-sleeve dresses have a way of looking classy even when they’re a mini-dress. We suggest going with a long-sleeve dress that’s off-the-shoulder or utilizes a V-neck. You can also pair it with another trend that’s attempting to make a comeback—knee-high socks. 

Overalls were useful and adorable in the ’70s. They said you’re ready to get work done, but you also wanted to look stylish at the same time. They lasted through the ’90s until they were promptly booted out the door.

Denim is coming back full force, and that includes overalls. You may have noticed them in clothing store ads! Whether you want to wear pants, shorts, or a dress, anything overall is totally up for grabs. Some overalls also have patterns, so don’t forget to play around with all the options.

Tonal dressing sounds more difficult than it actually is. Dropping all the bougie language, tonal dressing is about wearing the same shade in different fabrics. Generally, tonal dressers use variations of the  same color, but don’t worry about wearing exactly the same colors to the “T.”

You can go full tonal, or you can break it up with neutrals. If you’re going with earthy colors, you can wear white or black to emphasize the color. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with tonal dressing. It’s so easy. 

Trouser suits started popping up in the ’70s and stuck around through the ’80s. Women loved power suits because it made them feel like a boss. The trend disappeared in favor of more feminine looks, but it’s back!

Thanks to Blake Lively trouser suits became to appear on the red carpet. Like all fashion trends, that trickled down into mainstream fashion! Trouser suits are all business/business-casual, so you can pair it with flats and a classy blouse. 

One of the classic pieces of attire from the ’70s is a sweater with multi-colored stripes—you know the one! Any time anyone talks about multi-colored stripes, most of us picture that sweater or Rainbow Brite.

If you’ve looked around the store, you’ve probably noticed a lot of multi-color stripe patterns making their way back. Given that there’s a lot of color in this design, it looks best when paired with white and black shades. 

Thanks to the ’60s, fringe was huge in the ’70s. It wasn’t until the mid-to-late ’70s that fringe slowly started to fade out in favor of disco culture. That doesn’t mean people immediately put away their brown or tan fringe jacket, though!

Now that fringe is back, there are a number of ways you can wear this trend. You could go with the classic fringe coat, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can also try fringe bags, skirts, shoes, and so much more.

Faux fur became hugely popular in the ’60s and ’70s. It eventually slowed down since the idea of wearing fur became so controversial. That doesn’t change the fact that fur was warm and looked pretty darn fancy.

Faux fur began its return with teddy bear jackets. Now, fur is in full swing. Newer generations almost always have a faux fur jacket in their closet. The difference between now and the ’70s is that they come in every color under the sun!

Suede was the fabric of choice for women that worked during the ’70s. During this decade, suede was often a light brown, almost like mustard yellow got in the mix. Suede wasn’t just limited to skirts, though. You could also get boots, jackets, and tops made of the fabric!  

Now, you can get suede in whatever color you want. Many celebs are going with delicate colors instead of the mustard-yellowy brown. We particularly love lighter shades like rose pink, but any color works! The current trend seems to be favoring knee-high skirts, aka not quite mini and not quite midi. 

You couldn’t go anywhere in the ’70s without seeing platform shoes. Much of that was thanks to the disco era, and the trend stuck around for a while. That’s mostly because platform shoes were the idea shoe of choice for bell bottoms.

Platforms are coming back now, but not quite in the same way. Nowadays, sneakers and sandals are the most popular type of platforms to get. Sometimes, they’re also a lot higher than they were in the ’70s, but we say wear what’s comfortable. You shouldn’t trip over yourself while walking!

This is one of those trends that can be combined with others on the list. In the ’70s, jumpsuits often had halter necklines and were combined with platform shoes. Men and women alike wore this trend because it was a disco-must. 

Today’s jumpsuits often have deep V-necks and wide legs, but there’s plenty of variety! We prefer the jewel neckline without sleeves but to each their own! Jumpsuits still look fantastic with platforms, but sandals are a good second choice. 

Men and women alike wore blazers. Blazers just seem to transcend time because they appear in pretty much every era. The only thing that changes is the color, length, and fit. During the ’70s, blazers were long and doubled as a coat.

The great thing about wearing a blazer today is that there are so many cuts. You can roll with the classic blazer or get a collarless blazer. The collarless blazer is particularly useful for women with a larger chest because the flaps won’t lift up.

Have you noticed an influx of vests lately? Vests were huge during the ’70s, being another thing that carried over from the ’60s. A lot of people went with fringe, western-influenced vests made out of suede or leather. Others preferred crocheted vests.
